When it comes to travel essentials, our 2-cup Bialetti espresso maker is one of the first items that goes in the suitcase.

And that’s irrespective of where we are headed to.

What a lucky Bialetti!

It’s been all over Europe, Australasia, Southern Africa and parts in between!

It’s been camping in the wild, stayed in cozy Airbnbs and hotels and travelled on planes, trains, ferries and in cars and buses.

And why is that? Because this tiny Italian coffee pot ensures we start every day with a perfect cup of coffee.

It’s an integral part of our travel experience. And with this compact stovetop espresso maker, we never have to question the quality of our morning brew!

The Bialetti Moka Express is a classic piece of Italian design that’s been around for decades, and is likely to be around for many more.

What We Like About It?

It’s design is beautifully simple and the function is old school. No electronic motors or chips or electric leads or batteries to worry about.

For us, it’s the ideal portable coffee maker as its incredibly versatile and can work almost anywhere.

We’ve brewed our espresso coffee on electric stoves, gas cooktops, and even over an open fire when camping.

Basically all you need is a heat source and a few minutes, and the smell of rich, fresh coffee fills the air!

Our one semi failure was when we were staying at Lake Annecy in France and our AirBnB was equipped with an induction stove top. We solved that by using an induction stove friendly pan with water in it, put the Bialetti in the water, and then boiled the water.

Took a bit longer, but coffee was served!

Compact & Durable

The Bialetti’s solid aluminum body is virtually indestructible, and even after years of travel, our little yellow minion is still going strong

Maintenance is minimal, which is another reason we love it.

The only thing we’ve had to replace over the years is the rubber O-ring seal that sits between the top and bottom sections. These inexpensive seals are easy to find online or in hardware stores, and swapping one out takes less than a minute.

They also often come in combination with a new metal filter, so we have usually changed both at the same time. At a guess I would say we do that once a year.

Apart from that, it’s just a matter of rinsing it clean and drying it before packing it away for the next destination or next cup of coffee.

And by the way, when we are at our home base between travels, and we are at home for the day, then we use a6 cup version that we brew up every morning. Makes refills easier, and it’s more practical if we have people pop in for a coffee and chat.
